Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

At Haven Massage we strive to deliver a tailored massage experience; and as such we want to answer any questions you may have. Some of the most common questions are listed below. If you have any other questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact us.

What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy is a recognized healthcare practice that positively contributes to ones general health and wellness. It manipulates the bodies soft tissues to help relieve pain and stiffness associated with stress, tension, injury, and other conditions. It brings many benefits to our muscles, connective tissues, tendons, and ligaments in the form of managing pain, tension, and stress levels.

What can I expect during my first massage?

When you arrive I will greet you and ask you fill out a “Health History” form. We will go over your goals and areas of concern. I will show you to the room, leave, and allow you to undress to your comfort level. After undressed, you will lay on the table, under the sheets, facing up. I will knock on the door before coming back in. You will receive a full body (unless previously discussed) customized massage including scalp, neck, shoulders, arms, hips, legs, and feet. You will be covered at all times with a sheet or blanket, except for the area being worked on by the therapist. Private areas will never be uncovered for any reason, at any time. After completing the massage I will leave the room to allow you to regroup and get dressed. We will then go over after-care for the massage to help the benefits last as long as possible.

Should I feel pain during my massage?

The short answer is “No”. If you are struggling to breath or clenching your teeth, then the pressure is too much and you should say so. Tell your massage therapist what you are experiencing. If you are in pain, your body will fight relaxing and you will not get the full benefits of your massage.

That being said; there may be points while getting a Deep Tissue Massage or Trigger Point Work where there is discomfort, especially during the break up of adhesions or knots, but always communicate with your therapist where your comfort level is at.

How much clothing should I remove for a massage?

Our therapists will tell you to “undress to your comfort level”, and leave the room to give you time to get ready for the massage. Most people will undress to their underwear, while others prefer to go nude. It is entirely up to you and your comfort level. All clients will be covered with a sheet or blanket, except for the area the therapist is currently working on. You will never be covered with just a towel, and private areas will remain covered at all times. The only exception to this is Thai Yoga Massage. During a Thai Massage you will be wearing loose fitting clothing for the duration of the session.

What if I’m self-conscious?

Being self-conscious shouldn’t keep you from seeking health care, including getting a massage. A professional massage therapist will be non-judgmental.  During massage, we focus on your muscles, the work they are doing, and the pain they are in. Still, some common concerns among clients are:

  • acne
  • weight
  • thinking they have ugly feet, hands, etc.
  • self consciousness about scars
  • worrying about body hair

If you are self conscious about a part of your body, please speak up. Our therapists will understand, and avoid an area if you so choose. Clothed massages are also available if requested. This is your massage, and your comfort is our top priority.

Can I talk during the massage?

Sure, its all up to you! Many people like to chat with their therapist, while many others like to close their eyes and relax. Either one is fine, and the therapist will take cues from you.

There are some types of massage require a bit of feedback, such as deep tissue and trigger point work. During these massages the therapist will routinely check your comfort level. Please let us know during any massage if you are:

  • in pain
  • you’re too warm or cold
  • need more or less pressure
  • would like an area worked on longer
  • if you need to go to the bathroom
  • if you have concerns about an area of work
  • have any questions about the massage

What if I have to go to the bathroom?

Speak up! You won’t be able to fully relax if you are trying to hold it during your massage. There is a full length robe and slippers available to you at all times.
